Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the business responsibility for human rights have become the focus of increased attention around the world in recent years.
Companies are confronted with these issues from various angles: CSR is commanding more and more space in the media; consumer organisations are increasingly demanding information about production conditions and routes to market; non-governmental organisations and trade unions approach companies with requests and demands regarding their commitment to society.
Politicians have also discovered CSR as an area for policy-making; at UN level, the Human Rights Council recently adopted a framework for human rights and business. In Europe, the EU Commission intends to propose legislative measures for transparency in social and environmental information, and in California, a law now requires companies to disclose information on their supply chain management.
For the IOE, CSR and human rights have long been a matter of high priority. For many years, the IOE has been actively engaged in the business and human rights activities of the UN Human Rights Commission and its successor, the UN Human Rights Council. Moreover, the IOE helps its member organisations, through information and practical advice, to better support their member companies to shape and communicate their CSR activities. The IOE, as the most representative global business federation, is also facilitating and promoting the worldwide exchange of experiences, for example through its CSR Working Group.
This new newsletter is a further service designed to inform members and their member companies about CSR developments at UN level, as well as in countries and regions around the world. The newsletter takes an interactive approach and invites IOE members to propose articles on CSR developments in their countries, to share information on conferences and publications within the global business community, as well as to use the newsletter to exchange worldwide experience and best practice.
